Before you begin: Use your RV and component manuals for model-specific procedures. Stop and use a qualified professional for electrical, propane, structural, or other work beyond your training.
Identify the heater type
Tank, tankless, gas, electric, and dual-fuel RV water heaters have different procedures. Find the model number and manual before opening a panel, draining, flushing, or resetting anything. Some units have an anode rod; others specifically do not.
Do not buy an anode rod or remove a drain plug by assumption. Use the instructions for your exact heater.
Shut down and cool before inspection
Turn off the energy sources as the manufacturer directs. Hot, pressurized water can scald. Allow the system to cool, relieve pressure using the specified procedure, and use eye protection when working at a drain.
If you smell propane or see damaged wiring, stop and use qualified service.
Inspect for leaks and buildup
Look around the exterior access door, fittings, relief valve, and interior connections for drips, corrosion, or water stains. Hard-water scale can reduce performance; the manual may specify a flush method or service interval.
Do not seal over a relief valve leak or block a vent. A recurring discharge or flame issue needs diagnosis.
Winterize the heater correctly
Many tank heaters must be drained and bypassed before RV antifreeze is pumped through the plumbing. Tankless systems can require special steps. Follow the appliance and RV manuals together, including any low-point drains.
Never energize a drained tank heater. In spring, confirm it is full of water before turning electric or gas heat back on.
Troubleshoot in a safe order
Check power, fuel availability, water supply, controls, and visible error codes before opening equipment. Repeated ignition failure, soot, overheating, or electrical faults belong with a trained technician.
