Before you begin: Use your RV and component manuals for model-specific procedures. Stop and use a qualified professional for electrical, propane, structural, or other work beyond your training.
Identify your RV connection
Most RVs use a 30-amp or 50-amp shore-power connection. These are different connector types and electrical arrangements. Read the RV inlet label and owner’s manual before buying an adapter or extension cord.
A 50-amp RV service has two hot legs; the number is not simply a small upgrade from 30 amps. Never modify a pedestal plug to make it fit.
Inspect before connecting
Check the pedestal and your cord for damage, moisture, heat marks, or loose contacts. If the pedestal is visibly damaged or a breaker trips repeatedly, ask the campground to inspect it.
Use a properly rated RV surge or electrical protection device if appropriate for your setup. Follow the product instructions and understand that adapters do not increase the available power.
Connect in a deliberate order
Turn off large RV loads and the pedestal breaker before connecting. Attach the RV end and pedestal end securely, then turn on the breaker as directed by your RV and pedestal instructions. To disconnect, turn the breaker off first.
Keep connections off wet ground and do not coil excess cord tightly under heavy load. Stop using a connection that becomes hot or smells of burning.
Know when an electrician is needed
Incorrectly wired outlets can damage RV equipment and create shock risk. If you need a home RV outlet installed, use a licensed electrician familiar with RV 30- and 50-amp service. Never assume a similarly shaped household appliance outlet is suitable.
