Decide whether you need one
A portable waste tank can move gray or black water to a dump station when the RV stays parked without a sewer hookup. It does not eliminate the need for a legal dump point, and it adds equipment that must be cleaned and stored separately from potable-water gear.
Check campground rules and the connection height at your RV. A tank that is too tall for gravity draining may be unusable without a compatible transfer method.
Size for weight, not only capacity
Water weighs roughly 8.3 pounds per US gallon before accounting for the tank itself. A large capacity can quickly become too heavy to move safely. Consider the distance, terrain, wheels, handle, and whether the manufacturer permits towing it behind a vehicle at low speed.
Choose a size you can actually handle when full. Verify fittings and the tank’s rated capacity before purchase.
Connect and transfer carefully
Use the hoses and caps specified by the tank maker. Stabilize the portable tank, verify all connections, and open the RV valve slowly. Monitor the level continuously. Never leave a transfer unattended or overfill the tank.
Keep a dedicated rinse hose and gloves. Do not use a drinking-water hose for wastewater cleanup.
Dump, rinse, and store
Empty only at an approved dump station. Follow local rules for rinsing and disinfecting, then dry and cap the tank before storage. Inspect wheels, seals, and fittings for leaks before the next trip.
If you use one portable tank for both gray and black water, treat it as contaminated wastewater equipment at all times.
